If he was born in March 1927, how was he 17 when he joined the Navy in 1946 as stated in your biography of Chavez? I've read elsewhere that he was a WWII veteran which means he joined before 1946.

Cesar Chavez was a great Latin American. He never used violence even though he thought it would work. He knew that violence breads violence so he did what most Americans wouldn't do. Cesar used peaceful demonstrations such as the fast and the walks. Cesar Chavez to me is what a real role modal should look like. Best Wishes to his family. Thy thalt shall pass will be remembered in thou loved ones heart for more than a life time.

My father, Esequiel Covarrubias, was one of the many people that supported and worked with Cesar Chavez, Manuel Chavez, Dolores Huerta and many more. My parents would welcome them in their humble home in Roselawn avenue in their many tours, eating tortillas con frijoles papitas con chile. I am the daughter of immigrants fighting for human rights side by side with my father. We worked in one of the vineyards of "The Novitiate of Los Gatos" in Modesto, picking grapes as a family like many others. Today my father passed away and I am proud to say that all those memories shall be forever with us. 05/15/2008

in the Chavez and the UFW link I was reading through CHavez's life and it says that he dropped out of school in 8th grade but then it says that he married his high school sweet heart? Its an inconsistency that I think we should fix thanks guys.

I have always respected Cesar Chavez for the great man he was and his legacy continues to live on after his death. I make sure to have my children understand the importance of hard work and commitment to everything they do in life like the great man Cesar. I am very proud to be a hispanic, a descendent of field workers and now a sucessful government employee. Thank you very much for the wonderful fundamental values taught to me throughout all these years.

Cesar Chavez was inportant in so many different ways. He empowered the workers to seek justice in the fields the were so unforgiving. He gave hope to those who believed that through honest hard work- change is possible. He stood for those persons who were overlooked and continue to be ignored. His fight is ongoing as we recognize that working conditions still need to improve. Thank you Cesar for all that you did and for leaving such and important legacy in your name. God Bless the Chavez Family and you all as well.

I grew up on a farm in Salinas, California and knew firsthand, the suffering of the campesinos. I was lucky. My father had a full-time job on the farm as an irrigator, and no longer had to move around with the crops. I saw the fields wet with pesticides and the families of women and children who would have to go into the fields right after spraying, with the white poison still running down the furrows.I saw the living conditions of many of the migrant families, and decided that I needed to get involved.

To that end, I volunteered for a year without pay for the CRLA office in Salinas and worked with Hector de la Rosa and Mo Jourdane and George Shirley at the local office to help ban El Cortito as an unsafe labor tool. We took depositions, interviewed fieldworkers and wrote briefs. Finally, I was valley investigator for CRLA. I drove around and took photographs after we successfully banned El Cortitos use.

The farmers who allowed labor contractors to used crews equipped with the hoe were fined. EventuallyI no longer saw its use. It still brings tears to my eyes as I think of those who were involved in the struggle, and I am glad when I drive thru the valley and see the workers using long-handled hoes. Tom Valdriz

while reading these enlightining comments on Cesar Chavez, i came across a popular phrase, "When in Rome do as the Romans do" so i fully support all of you who are saying this, nothing gives to my American pride more than to hear the great tries of assimiliation that many people are trying, because "When in America, Lie and cheat and steal from the underprivledged/uneducated poor illegals and citizens alike! Go America! i sure am proud that we have remained stable in our imperialistic conquest. from the NATIVE Americans to the ever so popular Mexicans,we are one of the few that stick to our guns. with all due respect to the brave soldiers whom are dying every second for your right to praise the hipocracy America stands for. no matter how many people die trying to bring absolute peace to this world(America Included) in the end it will come down to the Rich white man and the second class minorities.

to those who can see beyond this brainwashed world's logic, i commend you, because with you, there is no difference in race, only hearts.

In response to other posts, I must add more. I just need to clarify something. United States citizens often forget that when you accuse immigrants of being in "America" no so they must learn English and not wave a Mexican flag, you are forgetting that Mexico, Costa Rica, Hondurus, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Paraguay, Guyana, Ecuador, Uraguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, , Puerto Rico, Argentina, Chile, Peru... All of these people... are Americans. They belong to North, Central and South American. Although there is a major push for an English Only United States, the USA does not have an official language. I believe that everyone has the right to speak whichever language they so choose. Its important to remember that the USA built this country by taking it away from others, Native Americans, and Mexicans alike. Its also important to remember that US buisnesses bank on immigrants because they benefit from paying them so little and the fact that they do not have rights, and they do the dirtiest of the dirtiest jobs. I understand the heated debate about immigration, but it is very important to respect all people, avoid stereotypes, and get the facts right. History plays an important role in the present. Lets not forget

Hi everyone, I am a student at Michigan State University, studying Spanish and English as a second language. I am studying to become a teacher, and in one of my classes we are developing unit plans. I am planning on doing the unit on Chavez, and his important role in US history. However, I am having a hard time finding resources about Chavez in Spanish that my potential students could use. Any ideas out there?

I am not Hispanic yet I believe that Cesar Estrada Chavez was, and in spirit, a very inspirational man who worked hard. What I really liked about Chavez's saga is how he was the normal, lower working class, migrant worker who rose to became who he was, the greatest Hispanic father figure. I am currently writing a research paper and I give my thanks to all of the people who gave their sole opinions and views on Chavez. I give my regards to Mr. Chavez.

Cesar Chavez has had a great influence in our society. I feel especially touched by his influence since it is in my very own hometown he started creating changes. My parents and grandparents actively participated in rallies and boycotts lead by him and they tell me he was a gentle leader who looked down on followers who turned to violence. How he made such a great change in such a peaceful way is amazing. He definately has my respect.

I might not even be with my family. We inspire him!! Thanks alot Cesar for all that you have done for us. we miss you!!!

I think it is great what Mr. Chavez did for his people. But now his people need to work on becaoming American Citizens and not Mexican immigrants. I feel that the hispanics are the continuing what Ceaser Chavez fought for. They are still continuing to settle for less and not willing to learn how to blend with the American's. They are to lazy to learn English. I totally agree with a comment that the person left about waving the American flag the the Mexican flag. Face reality you are in America not Mexico.

There were so many great people in the past.During segragation there was Martin Luther King Jr.Ruby Bridges helped kids stand up to thier parents in order to go to an all white school. In a migrant farm worker life there was one that protested and stuck with it until the end. That person was Cesar Chavez.Sure there was Ruby Bridges Martin Luther King Jr.,but there was also Cesar Chavez, who was stopping people from poisoning thier children. He was a great respected man who was still respected even when death came to him.

This is in response to the entry from Washington, D.C. on 10/14/04. "That same year Richard Chavez designed the UFW Eagle and Cesar chose the black and red colors. Cesar told the story of the birth of the eagle. He asked Richard to design the flag, but Richard could not make an eagle that he liked. Finally he sketched one on a piece of brown wrapping paper. He then squared off the wing edges so that the eagle would be easier for union members to draw on the handmade red flags that would give courage to the farm workers with their own powerful symbol. Cesar made reference to the flag by stating, "A symbol is an important thing. That is why we chose an Aztec eagle. It gives pride . . . When people see it they know it means dignity." http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/cesarchavez/his2.html

After marching today in protest of the proposition condemning illegals as felons I was confused to hear the chants "Si Se Puede." However, our world and country face a new globalizing world different to Chavez. I sympathize with my Mexican American friends with jobs that feel threatened by more illegals and with hard working Americans who feel that they are paying more taxes for illegals even amongst their cheap labor which feeds America. One thing that is very clear is that we have so much to be proud of as Americans. The fact that Mexicans, or any immigrants, will dangerously and illegally enter the USA for their 10 hour a day labor proves this to us. We must make sure our people are registered. But, we cannot send this people back to the countries they came from when they worked hard to feed themselves, their families, and us. We must be patriotic and show that our country will support the natural rights of all humans on this Earth. Thats the reason are country was created and that fact will be eternal.

What Mr Chavez did for his people is commendable. However, I am not so sure he would approve of how his people are using his name today. Let's remember, the U.S. in the past has been BUILT by those who loved THE UNITED STATES and they did it legally. We welcome immigrants to this beautiful nation, but only those who apply to become U.S. citizens legally. I am tired of paying taxes to this government and having that money used to pay for health benefits, etc. for the illegals in this country. Especially the women who cross the border to have their child born here and thus become a citizen. This HAS GOT TO STOP. As another writer said, "When in Rome do as the Romans do.....SPEAK ENGLISH. Also, you are so intent on being a U.S. Citizen, then wave the Stars and Strips that our soldiers (men and women are still fighting for. Wave your Mexican flag in MEXICO! If your President of Mexico cared for you he would clean up the corruption and take care of his people...not just the rich, but also the poor.

My parents and my grandparents were born in Texas and their main source of income was from working in the fields. I was born in a migrant camp of a cotton farm. My parents settled out in Ill and my dad went to work in an iron factory. Although the work was hard, he felt that it could never compare to the pain, suffering, and humiliation(given by the owners) for fieldwork. But he also felt very strongly about it being honest work. On his vacation weeks from the factory he would take us to work in the onion, tomato, and soy bean fields so that we could learn how to earn an honest days wages. He also wanted us to learn to appreciate that to have money is to work for it. For two summers when I was in high school he let us go live and work with his brother in a migrant camp so that we could learn what it was like to live in those conditions. I for one appreciate all my Dad taught us. Needless to say, when I was in Junior College and the Movimiento started, I was right there in the middle of it all. It is something that my kids are just learning this year. They are starting to find out that to make effective and long-lasting changes people have to work together for each other. And you don't succeed with violance and digenerating language. They are learnig the real meaning of "Si Se Puede" God Bless Cesar's family and everyone who continues his work. Viva Cesar! Si Se Puede!

As a white man at 57 years of age I grew up in San Diego and lived thought the movement of the UFW and Cesar Chaves. One thing that I think we all may forget is that Cesar was apposed of illegal immergation. He knew that the illegals would keep the wages down. Any one in any trade that is using illegals should be conserned for their life style to progress. I'm all for Legal immergration and for the immergration standards be like the ones that my fore-father was subject to.

There is this one entry that really blew my mind, and how it said that you have be able to speak spanish now a days to be able to get a job in the states. Well that is true and what the entry said that got me mad was that he/she told us hispanics to leave if we dont like it!! Well Buddy guess what America is changing into a different society whether you like it or not , and if you don't like it you can leave the country. So those were my thoughts on a specic entry on the site. In other words Cesar Chavez was a great man who really helped us hispanics to get jobs and a better salary. Which is great!

Cesar Chavez was a great influence among alot of people let alone hispanics. He was an impressively hard worker who longed to fight for what he believed in. He was often discriminated a gainst but he didn't seem to mind, the only subject that ever seemed to interest him was to strive far and make a difference in this country.

I am disappointed that most people today have forgotten or do not know who Cesar Chavez was and the importance of his struggle for his people...all of our people.

With the negative way that mexican immigrants are being portrayed by the general public today, Cesar's story needs to be told. As it is the true story of the american immigrant and what america was born from.

Any person of any race would be humbled by his story and would undoubtedly become more compassionate about the people we share our earth with.

overall i believe that Cesar Chavez was a strong man. he was a person that fought against evil. i will be doing the ufw for my 8th grade history fair because i want to let others know that latinos arent bad people and that because we all are diferent we do not deserve to be treated like crap. i have white skin im mexican but because of that i will not be discriminated. i have earned the respect of others and of my teachers and respect was something Chavez earned and because of that he stands at top in history as the fater of all chicanos.

Cesar Chavez was and is a pioneer of freedom for human rights. To me, what made Cesar so great, was the fact that he gave his entire life every day and night of his 66 year life for the betterment of Mexican people and all people. He stood strong and true in the face of oppression and battled injustice head on but always with a peaceful heart and divine wisdom. Cesar is to be emulated by all. I wish our president was more like Cesar Chavez.

Right now I am a fifth grader and I am learning about Cesar Chavez for History Day. So far, I have learned that he was a great man and did the right thing for the farmworkers. I have also learned that a lot of people didn't like him. I think they are crazy. My grandpa was treated like he was in school because he spoke Spanish like Cesar. I think that was very rude. I am glad Cesar was able to peacefully fight for the farmworkers.

Cesar Chavez, he was one of the few very important mexican people who made a very important change in our lives, and for that we all will always have him in our memories. if it hadn't been for Cesar Chavez, we,mexicans, as a whole, wouldn't have the opportunities that we have now,we have the opportunity to make our dreams come true like he did, but our dreams can only come true if we work hard and realy want them. Because of Cesar Chavez, we're not a minority anymore.

I never knew Cesar Chavez until we learned about him today at school.Cesar Chavez ,you're very lucky to be known as a really good person who made the farm owners work with your union and help the migrant farm workers with using boycott.I really wish I were you so I could be known really good just like you Cesar.I'm sorry you and your family didn't have enough money to pay the taxes on your farm and I'm also sorry that you guys were forced to move and lost your land. That's extremely super duper extradily sad.In class today we had a writing test and that's how we learned about you.It was sort of a long story but not much, anyway we had to highlight the important details and ride it neatly in cursive but in a summary. You Rock!

You are very lucky to be known like you are right now. I bet you get a lot of attention. You are really famoyus to me. What I like about you is that you stopped the farm owners not giving their farm workers much credit even if only the farm workers worked but the owners didn't. Do you think it's fair because I know I don't? If I were one of the farm workers I would've tried to escape like Harriet Tubman did. You are exremely good person Cesar.

The video was quite powerful in relaying the message that there was a great need for change among the farmworkers during the Cesar Chavez era. I remember the blisters on my feet from picketing. I recall the fear that one of us would get shot because we were fighting for something that I, as a child, didn't quite understand. Someone asked why did they use red on the flag? I recall my mother say once that it was the blood of our poeple that kept the food on the "gringo's" tables. "If they only understood they were drinking our blood in their wine glasses" It's hard to understand the "struggle", "La Causa", "the movement", La huelga!" I walked to Sacramento. That was the day someone spit on me. How do you explain such a profound gesture to a child. We fought to have health coverage, pensions, job security, cost of living increases, education...it was not in vain. They key is to do something with what we've accomplished.

At the end of the second video in the chicano video series FIGHT IN THE FIELDS one of the growers says that he felt like he had betrayed his workers when he signed the Delano contract for better worker conditions in 1969. I can not figure out why he felt this way. If anyone has insight on this please post your response.

To whom this may concern,,, I would like to know able the good things that some of the farmers did for some of the hispanic workers... We have all heard and read about the bad issues... My father was one of the crew leaders who worked for some of the farmers and us his childern as workers... My father and the farmers we worked for ALWAYS went out of their way to help the workersat our expense, my father would get better paybetter housing, for the workers. Also made sure these families had food and proper care and school for their children... before they step foot out onto the fields, With the help of the farmers... My father said little about Chavez But knew what he stood for TO MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF with the hard work of others... The hispanic families need to learn to speak up for themselfs and learn the laws in which (state) they live in... and their families to be heard... and helped. Again I only know what my father would tell us, there is always two sides to this... Can you add to the other...My father and our famly helped the childen and wifes of the husbands who followerd Chavez to strike did the UFW hepl feed the families? Maybe some but not all... F.VELEZ

I think that your website is a very good resource, I am doing a project about famous Hispanic Americans and how they impacted America. Cesar Chavez was a great man and he did great things.

Althoug Chavez did do a lot for the field workers and he was able to become this great guy... why do some people not like him. ÝFor example an older man that i spoke with told me, if he did so much for his people, why is it that he became big, but people out in the fields are still the same. ÝThey do not live any better than they did before. Ýi'm just a bit confused i guess...

i'm a high school student here in washington, dc. i attend a school that is actually named after cesar chavez, Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School for the Public Policies. in my public policy class our teacher had us watch the movie and i really liked it. but there was one thing i think i didn't catch about the movement... Why did they pick the colors red black and white to represent themselves?... but other than that i really enjoyed this documentary!
