He never used violence even though he thought it would work. He knew that violence breads violence so he did what most Americans wouldn't do. Cesar used peaceful demonstrations such as the fast and the walks. Cesar Chavez to me is what a real role modal should look like. Best Wishes to his family. Thy thalt shall pass will be remembered in thou loved ones heart for more than a life time. 09/19/2008 Norah Lujan Modesto, California My father, Esequiel Covarrubias, was one of the many people that supported and worked with Cesar Chavez, Manuel Chavez, Dolores Huerta and many more. My parents would welcome them in their humble home in Roselawn avenue in their many tours, eating tortillas con frijoles papitas con chile. I am the daughter of immigrants fighting for human rights side by side with my father. We worked in one of the vineyards of "The Novitiate of Los Gatos" in Modesto, picking grapes as a family like many others. Today my father passed away and I am proud to say that all those memories shall be forever with us. 05/15/2008 in the Chavez and the UFW link I was reading through CHavez's life and it says that he dropped out of school in 8th grade but then it says that he married his high school sweet heart? I make sure to have my children understand the importance of hard work and commitment to everything they do in life like the great man Cesar. I am very proud to be a hispanic, a descendent of field workers and now a sucessful government employee. He empowered the workers to seek justice in the fields the were so unforgiving. He gave hope to those who believed that through honest hard work- change is possible. He stood for those persons who were overlooked and continue to be ignored. His fight is ongoing as we recognize that working conditions still need to improve. Valdriz Danville, CA I grew up on a farm in Salinas, California and knew firsthand, the suffering of the campesinos. I was lucky. My father had a full-time job on the farm as an irrigator, and no longer had to move around with the crops. I saw the fields wet with pesticides and the families of women and children who would have to go into the fields right after spraying, with the white poison still running down the furrows.I saw the living conditions of many of the migrant families, and decided that I needed to get involved. To that end, I volunteered for a year without pay for the CRLA office in Salinas and worked with Hector de la Rosa and Mo Jourdane and George Shirley at the local office to help ban El Cortito as an unsafe labor tool. We took depositions, interviewed fieldworkers and wrote briefs. Finally, I was valley investigator for CRLA. I drove around and took photographs after we successfully banned El Cortitos use. The farmers who allowed labor contractors to used crews equipped with the hoe were fined. EventuallyI no longer saw its use. It still brings tears to my eyes as I think of those who were involved in the struggle, and I am glad when I drive thru the valley and see the workers using long-handled hoes. I just need to clarify something. United States citizens often forget that when you accuse immigrants of being in "America" no so they must learn English and not wave a Mexican flag, you are forgetting that Mexico, Costa Rica, Hondurus, El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Paraguay, Guyana, Ecuador, Uraguay, Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, , Puerto Rico, Argentina, Chile, Peru... All of these people... are Americans. They belong to North, Central and South American. Although there is a major push for an English Only United States, the USA does not have an official language. I believe that everyone has the right to speak whichever language they so choose. Its important to remember that the USA built this country by taking it away from others, Native Americans, and Mexicans alike. Its also important to remember that US buisnesses bank on immigrants because they benefit from paying them so little and the fact that they do not have rights, and they do the dirtiest of the dirtiest jobs. I understand the heated debate about immigration, but it is very important to respect all people, avoid stereotypes, and get the facts right. History plays an important role in the present. What I really liked about Chavez's saga is how he was the normal, lower working class, migrant worker who rose to became who he was, the greatest Hispanic father figure. I feel especially touched by his influence since it is in my very own hometown he started creating changes. My parents and grandparents actively participated in rallies and boycotts lead by him and they tell me he was a gentle leader who looked down on followers who turned to violence. "That same year Richard Chavez designed the UFW Eagle and Cesar chose the black and red colors. Cesar told the story of the birth of the eagle. He asked Richard to design the flag, but Richard could not make an eagle that he liked. Finally he sketched one on a piece of brown wrapping paper. He then squared off the wing edges so that the eagle would be easier for union members to draw on the handmade red flags that would give courage to the farm workers with their own powerful symbol. However, our world and country face a new globalizing world different to Chavez. I sympathize with my Mexican American friends with jobs that feel threatened by more illegals and with hard working Americans who feel that they are paying more taxes for illegals even amongst their cheap labor which feeds America. One thing that is very clear is that we have so much to be proud of as Americans. The fact that Mexicans, or any immigrants,will dangerously and illegally enter the USA for their 10 hour a day labor proves this to us. We must make sure our people are registered. But, we cannot send this people back to the countries they came from when they worked hard to feed themselves, their families, and us. We must be patriotic and show that our country will support the natural rights of all humans on this Earth. However, I am not so sure he would approve of how his people are using his name today. Let's remember, the U.S. in the past has been BUILT by those who loved THE UNITED STATES and they did it legally. We welcome immigrants to this beautiful nation, but only those who apply to become U.S. citizens legally. I am tired of paying taxes to this government and having that money used to pay for health benefits, etc. for the illegals in this country. If your President of Mexico cared for you he would clean up the corruption and take care of his people...not just the rich, but also the poor. 3/29/06 San Juana Cornejo Grand Rapids, MI My parents and my grandparents were born in Texas and their main source of income was from working in the fields. I was born in a migrant camp of a cotton farm. My parents settled out in Ill and my dad went to work in an iron factory. Although the work was hard, he felt that it could never compare to the pain, suffering, and humiliation(given by the owners) for fieldwork. But he also felt very strongly about it being honest work. On his vacation weeks from the factory he would take us to work in the onion,tomato, and soy bean fields so that we could learn how to earn an honest days wages. He also wanted us to learn to appreciate that to have money is to work for it. For two summers when I was in high school he let us go live and work with his brother in a migrant camp so that we could learn what it was like to live in those conditions. I for one appreciate all my Dad taught us. Needless to say, when I was in Junior College and the Movimiento started, I was right there in the middle of it all. It is something that my kids are just learning this year. They are starting to find out that to make effective and long-lasting changes people have to work together for each other. And you don't succeed with violance and digenerating language. They are learnig the real meaning of "Si Se Puede" God Bless Cesar's family and everyone who continues his work. Viva Cesar! To me, what made Cesar so great, was the fact that he gave his entire life every day and night of his 66 year life for the betterment of Mexican people and all people. So far, I have learned that he was a great man and did the right thing for the farmworkers. I have also learned that a lot of people didn't like him. I think they are crazy. What I like about you is that you stopped the farm owners not giving their farm workers much credit even if only the farm workers worked but the owners didn't. In our class we have learned a lot from this web site about how great Cesar was. I just wanted to say thank you for letting us know about the wonderful things that Cesar Chavez changed to make my central valley a more peaceful place. 10/10/05 Lupe S The video was quite powerful in relaying the message that there was a great need for change among the farmworkers during the Cesar Chavez era. I remember the blisters on my feet from picketing. I recall the fear that one of us would get shot because we were fighting for something that I, as a child, didn't quite understand. Someone asked why did they use red on the flag? I recall my mother say once that it was the blood of our poeple that kept the food on the "gringo's" tables. "If they only understood they were drinking our blood in their wine glasses" It's hard to understand the "struggle", "La Causa", "the movement", La huelga!" I walked to Sacramento. That was the day someone spit on me. How do you explain such a profound gesture to a child. We fought to have health coverage, pensions, job security, cost of living increases, education...it was not in vain. I can not figure out why he felt this way. If anyone has insight on this please post your response. 9/26/05 FRANCES VELEZ To whom this may concern,,, I would like to know able the good things that some of the farmers did for some of the hispanic workers... We have all heard and read about the bad issues... My father was one of the crew leaders who worked for some of the farmers and us his childern as workers... My father and the farmers we worked for ALWAYS went out of their way to help the workersat our expense, my father would get better paybetter housing, for the workers. Also made sure these families had food and proper care and school for their children... before they step foot out onto the fields, With the help of the farmers... My father said little about Chavez But knew what he stood for TO MAKE A NAME FOR HIMSELF with the hard work of others... The hispanic families need to learn to speak up for themselfs and learn the laws in which (state) they live in... and their families to be heard... and helped. Again I only know what my father would tell us, there is always two sides to this... Seria semamente importante y educativo que en las escuelas de todo nivel tomaran el tiempo de ensenar quien es, que hizo por que lo hizo, o por lo menos dejar la asignatura de averiguar hacerca de el, ya que es alguien que forma parte de la historia de este pais.
